Unemployment

We are being hit hard in Enfield by a lack of jobs because of the massive redundancies in the city and the closure of well established businesses because of the recession.

Already we are above the national average in terms of unemployment.Behind the statistics lie the reality of people trying to face up to the prospect of unemployment and the financial hardship and personal distress that can come from being made redundant from a job.

Nationally we need a change of direction and a change of government that will create a stable economy. The government have relied on spending our money to create public sector jobs, but now that money is running out and unemployment could get even worse. We need to change this , and create the right conditions to attract more businesses to the UK and encourage businesses and individuals to once again start up in this country, and more importantly here in Enfield. That's why I support the Conservative council and Mayor Boris Johnson who are working hard to regenerate both the Lea Valley and Enfield to attract business to the area.

Youth unemployment in particular is very worrying, more so here in Enfield. Over 1 in 4 of young people between 18-24 are now not employed. This is economicaly very worrying for the future, but devastating for the indivduals themselves. The answer lies not just with re-training programes but creating the conditions for new business start ups to thrive and sustaining our small to medium size companies which is where the new jobs will come from.

Meanwhile during this difficult time I believe we should  create the right local conditions to support local companies and shops to help them survive during this recession. My campaign to 'Back Local Business' wants to encourage local people to make sure we use the local shops whenever possible.

Above all we need a change from talk to action and delivery. A strong voice in Parliament would make a big difference. We absolutely have to move Enfield forward and work to making the thrive once again and create new jobs for local people.

I have the experience of starting and managing my own business, and understand how important it is to have more local companies coming to Enfield to create local jobs for local people. One of may main priorites if I become your MP, is to ensure I do everything I can to achieve just that.
