What is your view on Chase Farm Hospital and what will the Conservatives do about it? - Andrew Thompson
Thanks for your Question Andrew.
With the coming election we now have a clear choice. The government have made their position very clear. They have decided to downgrade Chase Farm by 2013, replacing the hospital's fully-fledged A&E with an "urgent care centre". In addition we have now been told this urgent care centre will only be open 12 hours a day, with a GP service available through the night. This is nowhere near as good as an A&E department, as blue light ambulances will no longer go to Chase Farm. However Labour try and 'spin' this it is not 24hr A&E. In addition maternity services will also be cut. In short, if Labour win the election, the downgrading of our hospital will go ahead.
The Conservatives have promised a moratorium on all cuts that have not taken place at Chase Farm. This means halting the cuts and reviewing them on clinical needs, letting our local doctors and GPs look at the best way of providing local healthcare - without being told what to do by politicians. We are committed to taking the politicians out of managing the healthcare needs of the nation and removing this 'Whitehall knows best mentality" which in my opinion has led to this sorry state of affaires in Enfield. I personally would rather trust my healthcare needs to doctors, not politicians.
The next general election will be a two-horse race here in Enfield between Labour and the Conservatives. Our hospital is set to be downgraded - under a Labour government this won't change. Only the Conservatives offer Chase Farm Hospital a lifeline.
How much are all these pointless information TV adverts costing the taxpayer, they really annoy me when we are in so much debt? - Jackie Holmes
Hi Jackie I completely agree with you. Although TV advertising costs have come down a lot in recent years the fact is the volume of government spending means a lot of money. For example the advertising and marketing spend for the Department of Transport in 2008/9 was £26.5 million- and that is just one department! I will try and find out the estimated total spend now that you have asked. In the meantime rest assured a Conservative government has pledged to cut down on this and consultancy expenditure as part of our deficit reduction plans.
